Loid, Yor, Anya, and Bond

Loid Forger is a genuinely interesting character underneath the competence. He is a war orphan who became a spy because he wanted a world where children do not cry, and the series keeps quietly noting that he is better at fatherhood than at admitting he is doing it for real.

Yor is the funniest character in the series and the most quietly sad. Extraordinarily lethal and socially anxious in equal measure, she took up assassination as a child to support her younger brother and has never developed a life outside it. Her attempts at ordinary domesticity are played for comedy but never for cruelty.

Anya is the engine. Her telepathy gives her access to everyone's secrets and none of the vocabulary to process them, so she interprets espionage and assassination as an exciting game. The series works because it plays its spy plot straight. Operation Strix has real stakes, Loid's tradecraft is competent, and the political situation is not a joke. Wit Studio and CloverWorks match this with expressive character animation that shifts registers cleanly, moving from genuinely tense action to broad cartoon reaction within a single scene. Anya's facial expressions became internet shorthand almost immediately, which is a reasonable indicator of how well the animation lands.

Themes: Performance, Peace, and Chosen Family

Every member of the Forger family is performing a role, and the series is interested in the point where performance becomes real. Loid is pretending to be a father in order to prevent a war; the joke, which the series takes seriously, is that preventing the war may end up mattering less to him than the pretending.

There is also a genuinely thoughtful thread about peace as unglamorous labour. Loid's work is not heroic in any visible way, it is paperwork, surveillance and school applications, and the series is clear that this is what actually holds the world together.
